The original idea was it would be a loser & be obliged to make the pensions up to par whereas at the rate above quoted the botany is a great gainer.
This state of affairs may be only temporary (for a year or two), but it is a matter that I commend to your Excellency's consideration - particularly in the case of old servants. Money should not be made out of ... in periods of want & it has come to my knowledge that some discussion has taken place on this subject of pensions to which the Audit Office may turn a sympathetic eye, but the Times are urgent and any temporary advance on my presumed increase of pension would by me, in my present circumstances, be most thankfully received.
